Summary:
The results of cast immobilization were compared to the results of functional treatment with an Aircast Ankle Brace for ankle sprains in this randomized prospective study. "[O]n the basis of our study and the literature, we recommend primary functional treatment (Aircast brace) as the therapy of choice for recent ruptures of the fibular ligament… Patients in the Aircast group rated the treatment success more highly than those in the immobilization group." The authors found "no advantages of immobilization in a plaster cast as opposed to functional treatment with the Aircast Ankle Brace."
