Early Mobilizing Treatment for Grade III Ankle Ligament Injuries

Konradsen L, Holmer P, Sondergaard L: Foot & Ankle 12(2): 69-73, 1991
Summary:
Functional treatment is compared to immobilization for the acute treatment of severe Grade III ankle sprains. "Patients treated with early mobilization [Aircast Air-Stirrup®] for their lateral ligament lesions achieved full mobility and returned to work and sports earlier than their immobilized counterparts." Early mobilization also "result[ed] in a satisfactory mechanical stability and functional end result… and this accords with our results for total immobilization and equals or betters previous studies of both immobilization and surgical repair." There was no significant difference in residual symptoms at the one-year follow-up when compared to the immobilized control group.
