Source:
Rettig AC, Kraft DE: Your Patient & Fitness 4(4): 6-9, 1991
Summary:
Quick, sure diagnosis and early treatment of ankle sprains can hasten recovery and reduce the risk of further injury. …Early treatment decreases edema, which can hinder the healing process. Prompt treatment also reduces the risk of further injury and the chance of persistent or chronic swelling and hemorrhage in the joint. These problems can cause adhesions and a decreased range-of-motion. Functional management includes early protected motion of the injured joint. The authors recommend the Aircast Air-Stirrup® which "provides compression and some stability to the ankle. The splint has the advantage of allowing dorsiflexion and plantar flexion, which are important to initial and subsequent rehabilitation."
