Source:
Walgenbach A: Nurse Practitioner Forum 7(3): 120-124, 1996
Summary:
An overview is provided of the anatomy, evaluation, treatment and prevention of ankle sprains. "The initial treatment of most ankle injuries, independent of their grade, is the same. The principles of treatment are to decrease swelling with icing, elevation, compression, and anti-inflammatory medication; stabilization; and early motion, with proprioceptive and strength training in rehabilitation… Compression can be accomplished with either an Ace wrap or with an Aircast Cryo/Cuff, which simultaneously ices and compresses the ankle in a boot-like device… Stabilization of the injured ankle is best provided by an Aircast stirrup, which provides for ambulation with both compression and protection while concurrently permitting motion in the safe range for the injured ligaments… Focusing on early mobility and exercise is crucial to achieving a return to optimal function and long-term ankle stability."
