Summary:
The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of athletic tape and a semirigid orthosis in limiting ankle motion before and after exercise. There was a significant increase in range-of-motion between the pre- and post-exercise testing sessions for the taping treatment. This "indicates a significant degree of loosening of the tape with exercise. No such difference, or loosening, was seen with the semirigid orthosis treatment… The results also demonstrated that the semirigid orthosis that was tested [Aircast Ankle Brace] provided greater restrictions of motion in inversion and eversion than did an application of athletic tape. These results suggest that a semirigid orthosis may be more effective than athletic tape in preventing ligamentous ankle injuries."
