Summary:
This prospective study was designed to document the effects of the Aircast Sport-Stirrup® on the incidence and severity of ankle sprains in soccer. "The principal finding of this study was that the application of a semirigid orthosis significantly reduced the incidence of ankle sprains in previously injured ankles of soccer players… Furthermore, the application of the Sport-Stirrup orthosis reduced the incidence of more severe ankle sprains in soccer players with a previous ankle sprain… A semirigid orthosis, such as the Sport-Stirrup orthosis, has a considerable advantage over taping, however, because it is more cost-effective, it requires no trained helper for its application, and it can be adjusted during the game by the player."
