Ankle Sprains: 20 Clinical Pearls
Source:
McGrew, CH, Schenck RC: Journal of Musculoskeletal Medicine, 20(1): 34–43, 2003
Summary:
This article represents a refresher course on the diagnosis and treatment of ankle sprains from anatomy to diagnosis to treatment. The authors note “…less than optimal treatment can result in residual symptoms and even disability. …Conservative approaches to treatment are generally adequate. NSAIDS may be useful, but functional bracing remains the mainstay of therapy for most patients… In some patients, short-term casting can be useful for a globally swollen grade 3 ankle sprain. For 95% of ankle sprains, however, functional bracing is the treatment of choice.”
