Summary:
This prospective randomized study compared a dual aircell brace with a single aircell brace. “The application of the dual aircell brace, unlike the single aircell brace, achieves a greater and faster reduction of swelling on the injured ankle… absolute reduction in swelling on average, after treatment with the dual aircell brace was significantly higher (67ml) than after therapy with the single aircell brace (28ml)… pressure gradient leads to a situation in which the collateral edema is reabsorbed and removed more effectively… an additional air cushion near the joint results in better stabilization and higher inversion protection of the injured ankle… protection of the joint thus achieved represents an important factor favorably influencing the healing process… precondition for early functional treatment and a short rehabilitation time. This, in turn, leads to symptoms subsiding earlier and the patient’s earlier return to work. This socioeconomic factor should also be urgently considered in selection of the treatment regime.”
