Improving Limb Salvage in Critical Limb Ischemia With Intermittent Pneumatic Compression: A Controlled Study With 18 Months Follow Up
Source: S.J Kavros, K.T. Delis, N.S. Turner, et al
Summary: Purpose: To evaluate the clinical role of IPC in the treatment of patients with critical limb ischemia, tissue loss and non-healing wounds of the foot on whom peripheral arterial revascularization had been exhausted. Results: • Control group: 20 patients (83%) failed to heal their foot wound and underwent a below knee amputation (BKA) • IPC group: 14 patients (58%) had complete wound healing and limb salvage Both wound healing and limb salvage were significantly better in the IPC group. Therefore, IPC used as an adjunct to wound care in patients with chronic CLI and chronic non-healing wounds/tissue loss improves the likelihood of wound healing and limb salvage.
